Moving Tips
Below you will find some tips to take the stress out of moving house and make it a more enjoyable experience. These tips plus more are supplied FREE with all home-moving packs!
Plan in advance
Moving home can be a stressful business, so anything you can do to relieve the stress and hassle is a good idea. If you know you’re going to be moving, but don’t necessarily have a date, you can still start tidying things up; perhaps sell unwanted items at a car boot sale, or on ebay, and throw out anything you don’t want and can’t sell on. You can start to box up non-essential items too, so there is less to do later on.
Wrap it up!
There’s nothing worse than unpacking a box of possessions to find that something fragile has broken in transit, especially when there is a simple solution: wrapping! Bubble wrap and tissue paper is very cheap, and it’s always worthwhile spending money on wrapping rather than replacing broken items. We provide plenty of bubble wrap in our home moving packs, but we can supply more if you think you’ll need it.
Pack the boxes properly
When it comes to packing the boxes, it’s important not to just throw everything in! Try and think about sharing out heavy items between boxes, and especially with books, pack the boxes carefully with heavier items at the bottom, and lighter things on top. You don’t want to hurt your back lifting something too heavy, and reasonably weighted boxes will make things easier for removal men too.
Seal the boxes securely
Boxes should be taped securely along the top and bottom, to prevent things from falling out. It’s sensible to use several bits of tape, so that if one comes off, there are still plenty there to hold everything in place. As with wrapping, packing tape is inexpensive, so it’s worth getting plenty.
Mark the boxes with their intended location
When you’re packing up your boxes, it’s a good idea to write on the outside of the box which room it is intended for, and the contents. This will help you and removal staff put things in the right place, and will save you hunting through hundreds of boxes to find a knife and fork on your first night. If you plan on putting any boxes into storage, this will also help when you come to take them out again.
Pack a ‘short-term’ bag
For the first few days and nights in your new house, things will usually still be packed up. It is therefore a good idea to pack an overnight bag, with essentials such as toothbrush and toothpaste, spare clothes, etc. Important documents, such as passports and birth certificates are also best placed in this bag, so there’s no chance they can get lost. With young children, packing a few toys and teddies may also help to make them feel more at home in your new house.
And finally, enjoy it!!
Most people find moving house a stressful event, and there’s no denying that it is one of the trickier things in life. However, if you make use of the tips above, and use your common sense, you can even enjoy it. Moving homes is an exciting time, and with a little help from Eurobox, we’re sure you’ll find your next move a stress-free experience!
